Course Description:

During the lifetime of the Prophet (saw,) the Sahabah and those who followed them, would recite the

Quran with Tajweed. That is, emphasising, stretching, pronouncing and delivering every letter with

the rulings and characteristics that apply to it. Reciting the Quran in this manner is a necessity and

enables the reciter to correct and beautify his/her recitation. Thus, the reciter can recite the Quran in

the method that the Prophet and his companions would recite it, as was received from JIbrail by the

Prophet (saw) in the classical Arabic dialect.

Arabic letters each have a Makhraj – an exit or articulation point - in the mouth or throat from which

they originate and they also each have Sifaat – attributes, or characteristics - particular to them.

Knowing the Makhraj and Sifaat of each letter is an important part of Tajweed. Sometimes two

letters have very similar exits which makes mixing them up easy. Not knowing the attributes of each

letter may change the context in Qur’an recitation. Observing the rules of Tajweed in reciting

protects the reciter from making mistakes in reciting the Qur’an.

Every Muslim should take it upon himself to study the science of tajweed so that his salaah and

recitation is perfected. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala addresses that by saying, “..and recite the Quran

(aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style,” [Surah al-Muzzamil 73: 4]. Allah subhanahu wa

ta’ala then details the manner in which the Qur’an should be recited in this ayah. However, in order

to do this, one must study under a mujawwid or qari (a teacher who has mastered the art of tajweed

and is able to rectify the mistakes of others). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The best among you

(Muslims) are those who learn the Quran and teach it.:

This course focuses on spreading knowledge (learning the Qur’an, and developing teaching skills in

the learners to participate in the noblest of good deeds (teaching the Qur’an). The complete course is

ten sessions spread over five weeks; however, some students may be eligible to enrol for next level

subject to the quality and fluency of their recitation. The focus will be on the letters of the Arabic

alphabet and their pronunciation, and their articulation points and characteristics, with an emphasis

on application. We concentrate on the correct recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah. Thereafter, shorter

surahs from Juz Amma (جزء عم ) will be incorporated into lessons depending upon the progress of

the group.

Course Goals and Objectives:

1) Please Allah (swt) by fulfilling the obligation of proper Quran recitation.

2) Integrate the characteristics of the letters within recitation.

3) Apply proper rules (ahkam) of tajweed in salah times.

4) Establish correct pronunciation of the letters from the exact articulation points.

5) Participate in a complete recitation of the Quran over the course of studying the science

of tajweed.

Tentative Syllabus:

Stage One: (Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha and short Surahs from Juz Amma “Juz30”)

Course Policy:

Attendance and Punctuality: Presence is very important as these sessions are based on

practical (face-to-face) engagement. The key for being successful in this short course is to

ensure that students are applying the recitation rules given in class. Upon completion of the

five weeks, students will be awarded a certificate of completion in basic Tajweed rules and

recitation. STUDENTS WHO MISS FOUR HOURS OR MORE WILL NOT QUALIFY FOR THE

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION.

Out of respect to the nature of the spiritual setting we are in, phones are either to be

turned off or put on silent mode to avoid disturbance.

Being on time allows for a smooth flow of this short course. It gives the student a chance to

recite more and utilize the specified time in gaining more reward, specifically during the

month of Ramadan.
