About The Event

Join us as we will be sharing in the songs, praise and love of the messenger of Islam

Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. We will be singing traditional qasidas,

nasheeds and songs of devotion with professional musicians from Granada.

Based in the beautiful city of Granada, home to the Alhambra palace, Jinnan Al

Andalus is a sufi music ensemble led by singer and violinist Hamid Ajbar. Born in the

Andalusí city of Chefchaouen, Morocco, Hamid Ajbar was brought up in a musical

tradition that has been transmitted and preserved ever since the expulsion of the

Muslims from Spain. He studied both Andalusian and Arab singing for over ten years,

and has won several prizes on a national level in Morocco for his singing. He has

collaborated with some of the greatest flamenco artists including the late Paco de

Lucia, Carmen Linares, Jose Merce, and El Lebrijano. He has taken part in several

festivals in Mexico, Switzerland, Portugal, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Spain.

The repertoire of “Jinnan Al Andalus” is a journey of the spirit that takes us from the

famous gardens of the Cordoban Caliphate, Granada and North Africa, to the no less

famous gardens of Damascus, including a variety of musical styles and maqamat

(musical modes) that can found in each region. The selection of qasidas and

muwashahat are taken from the works of great sufi masters of Al Andalus and the Arab

world and include works of Ibn Arabi, Rabia Al Adawiyya, Shushtari, Ibn Nawhi, Harraq

and others. The beauty of the words and melodies touch everyone to the core,

elevating the state of both audience and musician.

“God is beautiful and loves beauty.” With these wonderful words we wish to invite you

to travel with us on our spiritual journey through Al Andalus and let you be transported

by both the beauty of its melodies and poems.
