Zayn Mohammed:
"Zayn Mohammed is a UK based award-winning guitarist, multi-instrumentalist & composer. London born, by age three Zayn was playing flamenco guitar pieces. This was the result of his being exposed to Indian and Turkish classical music from birth. His father organized concerts for and was dear friend to Indian maestros such as Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan & Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, to name a few of the renowned musicians that were often visiting, performing & practicing in Zayn’s household. Simultaneously, Zayn was also immersed in Turkish, Mevlevi (Rumi’s Sufi Order) practices & Turkish Classical music as his father was keen on the Sama (Mevlevi Turning/Whirling). Yet, perhaps the biggest impact of all in Zayn’s young musical life was performing flamenco guitar to Maulana Sheikh Nazim Al Haqqani, a great Sufi Master of the Naqshbandi Sufi order, of whom Zayn’s father was a murid (follower). Zayn was raised in a home, that observed the Naqshbandi Sufi tradition. This played a key role in his spiritual and artistic life, in years to come.
By age nine he was performing flamenco nationally & by twelve appeared on live television playing funk/fusion. A move to Dubai in his teens led Zayn to further develop his musicianship by incorporating a wide array of world instruments into his palette - Oud (Middle Eastern Lute), Sitar & Sarod (Indian plucked stringed-instrument), Ney (Turkish Reed Flute), Rebab (Anatolian spike-fiddle) and Daf (frame drum), to name a few. These instruments would play a significant role in inspiring him to cultivate an identifiable sound & further develop his unique voice as a composer & musician.
Immersed & trained in various styles from RnB to Funk, Blues to Neo-Soul & his staple of Jazz, to his roots of Flamenco, Indian & Turkish classical, he imaginatively blends world (or ancient) & contemporary (or modern) sounds. Highly influenced by his Godfather, living legend jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal (Miles Davis’ biggest inspiration ), Zayn went on to study jazz performance at the renowned Berklee College of music, Boston USA. During his time at Berklee, Zayn garnered respect from his mentors such as David Gilmore, Danilo Perez and John Patitucci. He was a member of Berklee’s elite ‘Global Jazz institute’ and twice received the ‘Guitar Dept Achievement Award’. After receiving his BA, Zayn spent a couple of years on the jazz and world circuit in New York, where he frequently played at clubs and venues such as the famed ‘Blue Note’, opening for legendary jazz greats such as Pat Martino & Stanley Clarke. Following his success in the USA, Zayn was called to return to his hometown of London to continue his musical journey here, which has opened for him the door to his purpose in music - “to invite a listener to travel inward, toward the Love of their own Heart.”
In 2016 Zayn was crowned Sky Arts Guitar Star, receiving praise from his mentor, multi-grammy award winner George Benson, saying of him “He shows what guitar is all about, he’s truly a star.” To date, Zayn has performed alongside artists such as Wayne Shorter, Lee Ritenour, Nitin Sawhney, Lianne La Havas, Robert Mitchell, Gilad Atzmon and many more. He is currently making his mark on the London scene at jazz festivals and reputable venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and the Barbican, where he recently conceptualized & performed contemporary music based on the Sufi practice of Dhikr/Zikr (Divine remembrance). Zayn has an endless love for music, a deep sense of his own spirit, a wealth of professional experience, a unique arsenal of musical ability and captivating charisma in concert. He has a passion for sharing this knowledge through performances & public masterclasses where he treats the listener to passionate & honest expression of his innermost longing, through his music. He insists “When the music is really coming, I am not a musician, only an instrument, His instrument.”
